WEYFEST 2009 – THE BEST YET! WEYFEST – A 2 day music festival at the Rural Life Centre, Tilford, Surrey SEPTEMBER 5th & 6th You are the first people to hear about Tull (and Mick Abrahams’ Blodwyn Pig) at Weyfest. Even the The Weyfest website has not announced it yet! It is a small festival and tickets are limited; you can buy tickets before anyone else via the order form on this website, or by post to A New Day, cheques payable to Weyfest Ltd. Check out www.weyfest.co.uk for a general feel of the festival and for imminent updates. HELLO FROM THE WEYFEST TEAM. Our thanks to those of you who braved the horrendous weather last year to help us celebrate a wonderful musical weekend. We hope you all enjoyed it and we look forward to seeing you all again on September 5th and 6th this year – and hopefully plenty of new faces! As promised, we have listened to all your feedback and have put it to good use to ensure this year’s Weyfest really will be the best yet. To be honest, amongst all the positive feedback and compliments – and thanks for that – there were only two topics of complaint. (1) The weather.... and we’re working on that. (2) The bar ran out of beer! Again!! We have taken steps to correct this most serious of shortcomings and we are delighted to announce that the excellent Appledram Brewery are hosting the bar this year, with the promise of fine ales, their own renowned cider, and they will definitely not run dry. Weyfest was short-listed for the “Best Family Festival” award last year and we shall endeavour to provide even more entertainment to keep the youngsters amused all weekend. Good news for early campers too, as we will have a pre-festival gathering on the main campsite on Friday evening. Food and (hopefully) drink will be available (but bring your own, just in case!), with acoustic music in the marquee from some of the festival artists to ease us into the weekend. And what a weekend it promises to be. To say we are pleased with the line-up this year would be a massive understatement; one of the most rewarding aspects of feedback received is the genuine enthusiasm for the hitherto unknown bands that you have enjoyed, and we know you will discover many more gems this year. And as for established artists? Well, they don’t come much bigger than our headline band, the mighty JETHRO TULL. Tull, with over 60 million album sales to date, marked their 40th anniversary in 2008 with another massive, sold out world tour. Weyfest looks like being one of only two UK Tull gigs this year and we are truly honoured to be able to bring this legendary British rock giant to tiny Tilford. Tull will play a full concert set on Saturday evening. The supporting cast on Saturday is a wonder to behold also. The “godfathers of world music” and guaranteed bringers-of-sunshine OSIBISA are welcomed back to Weyfest with open arms, and the incredible Nik Turner brings his band of fellow ex-Hawkwind members SPACE RITUAL to take us on a musical journey through the cosmos. As if that wasn’t enough, the blues harp genius ERROL LINTON and his BLUES VIBE also take to the stage on Saturday. Sunday night sees the swift return, literally by public demand, of THE BEAT who tore the place up last year. We have got them back for a full concert set this year so bring your dancing feet with you! Other highlights on Sunday include the always great MUNGO JERRY, one of very few bands that can play a whole set full of genuine hits that we all know and love. JOHN OTWAY is back for more mayhem, accompanied by his long-time cohort WILD WILLY BARRETT. And of course, I mean OF COURSE we welcome back our own local hero JACKIE LYNTON and his band. And another real treat for Tull fans and lovers of guitar playing in general comes in the guise of the legendary MICK ABRAHAM’S BLODWYN PIG. Mick was of course the original Jethro Tull guitarist who left in 1968 to form the blues-rock band Blodwyn Pig, and is widely regarded as one of the finest guitarists in the UK. Speaking of guitarists, anyone who has ever seen the extraordinarily talented RODNEY BRANNIGAN will testify that there is nobody quite like him. A guy that plays two guitars at the same time might sound like some kind of cabaret gimmick, but this guy plays them fantastically well. Moreover he’s a truly gifted singer and songwriter with a wickedly dry sense of humour and the power to hold an audience spellbound. We are very lucky to have him back this year - fortunately he loves Weyfest as much as we do. There are still many artists to be confirmed, but just a peek at the confirmed line-up so far should be more than enough to have you rushing to the online box office. We have an early-bird Adult and Child Weekend ticket price for the first 750 tickets only, but please bear in mind the small size of the festival and the HUGE size of our line-up; we expect demand to be rapid so please don’t procrastinate too much if you want to ensure your ticket. GOODBYE, BIG AL HODGE Last month I received the very sad news that Al Hodge, singer and guitarist with The Mechanics, had passed away after a two year battle with cancer. I had been a fan since 1980, but it was only a chance remark by Andy Giddings in 1991 that gave me the chance to actually see him perform live, and that first Mechanics gig literally changed my life. The band were unbelievably good live, and Big Al was an absolute master of a frontman. Not in fact physically big, but he earned his Big Al moniker through his stage presence, a giant of a man with a guitar in his hands. He was the proverbial “larger than life” character, always smiling and laughing both on and off stage. Over the years I have dragged many a reluctant soul up and down the country to see a band that I thought they would like, with varying degrees of success, but nobody ever came away from a Mechanics gig without realising they had witnessed something very, very special. Big Al should have, would have been a huge star had he not been so devoted to his beloved Cornwall. He toured the world with Leo Sayer in the early years of The Mechanics, but afterwards was always reluctant to venture too far from his Kingdom of Kernow. And there he was the King. BBC Radio Cornwall broadcast a 3 hour tribute to him the day after he died. It’s a shame the rest of the country, and the world, never got to share in the greatness of the man, but I do know that he was always happy with his lot. He enjoyed life to the full, and he enriched the lives of all who were lucky enough to have known him. I’m proud to say I knew him as a friend, and the many gigs I saw in so many beautiful Cornish venues were some of the greatest days and nights of my life. I will miss him a lot. Thanks for the memories Al. DR Available now on A New Day Records, the long awaited new 2CD set from PAUL KING, multi-instrumentalist founder member of Mungo Jerry and King Earl Boogie Band.
