I had been a fan since 1980, but it was only a chance remark by Andy Giddings in 1991 that gave me the chance to actually see him perform live, and that first Mechanics gig literally changed my life. The band were unbelievably good live, and Big Al was an absolute master of a frontman. Not in fact physically big, but he earned his Big Al moniker through his stage presence, a giant of a man with a guitar in his hands. He was the proverbial “larger than life” character, always smiling and laughing both on and off stage. Over the years I have dragged many a reluctant soul up and down the country to see a band that I thought they would like, with varying degrees of success, but nobody ever came away from a Mechanics gig without realising they had witnessed something very, very special. Big Al should have, would have been a huge star had he not been so devoted to his beloved Cornwall. He toured the world with Leo Sayer in the early years of The Mechanics, but afterwards was always reluctant to venture too far from his Kingdom of Kernow. And there he was the King. BBC Radio Cornwall broadcast a 3 hour tribute to him the day after he died. It’s a shame the rest of the country, and the world, never got to share in the greatness of the man, but I do know that he was always happy with his lot. He enjoyed life to the full, and he enriched the lives of all who were lucky enough to have known him. I’m proud to say I knew him as a friend, and the many gigs I saw in so many beautiful Cornish venues were some of the greatest days and nights of my life. I will miss him a lot. Thanks for the memories Al. DR Available now on A New Day Records, the long awaited new 2CD set from PAUL KING, multi-instrumentalist founder member of Mungo Jerry and King Earl Boogie Band.
