OX15 (AND CD38) £11 The first solo album from erstwhile Fairport Convention, Jethro Tull and WAZ! multi-instrumentalist Maartin Allcock for ten years, this album shows the rockier side to Maart's playing which has been sorely missed since he left Fairport Convention three years ago. Along with some famous chums he has brought together four songs and eight instrumentals ranging from a twin violin remake of Jessica, the great driving tune from The Allman Brothers Band, to exciting, rocking new versions of Eastern European folk music. A brilliant standard of playing throughout from Maart, and what a band!!! Featured guest artistes include flautist Ian Anderson from Jethro Tull, Gerry Conway and Chris Leslie from Fairport Convention, Indian singer Najma Akhtar (Plant & Page), Troy Donockley (Maddy Prior Band, Midge Ure, Iona), Clive Bunker (Solstice, ex-Jethro Tull) and Gill Allcock. OX15 is a great place to live. We've been here for 12 years now and it really is home. My children have grown up here having been born in OX16. North Oxfordshire is sometimes referred to as The Folk-Rock Belt as many of the leading exponents of the genre live here, but there are great musicians from all backgrounds here, from Morris men to classical soloists to Prog-rockers. It's very central, you see, London and Birmingham easily within reach and in beautiful countryside. Clear skies at night yield brilliant stars due to the lack of skyglow and even though the power tends to go off as the first snowflake hits the overhead cable, winter scapes are just as beautiful as any other time. The only thing is it's a long way from the sea... Certainly OX15 provides the scope that's been lacking in recent ventures and results in plenty of invention and instrumental razzmatazz. Whenever We See The Dark features Ian Anderson and out-Tulls Jethro Tull, the collaboration with singer Najma Akhtar is a well-judged change of pace, while the sound-effects-strewn Crash Polka is the comedy instrumental of the year. If there's a sense that he's over-raiding the cupboard (a cover of the Allmans Brothers Band's Jessica?), the quality of the guests (Troy Donockley, Chris Leslie, Gerry Conway etc) and a consistently big sound more than compensate. Martin Allcock deserves a bigger stage. Reviewed by Rob Beattie MAARTIN ALLCOCK'S WEB SITE back to band list Price: £11 # 131(CD38) |
