Although Jethro Tull is a group, Ian Anderson is undeniably the leader and most instantly recognisable symbol of the band's existence.
Since (almost) the very beginning he has been at the helm, writing, singing, producing, guiding and representing all aspects of Jethro Tull. Besides Anderson, there have been something like 30 musicians over the years, each contributing in various amounts to the phenominal success Tull has achieved. Around 50 million albums sold, over 2,000 concerts played to millions of people, and 44 Platinum, Gold and Silver industry awards. Since their first album in 1968 they have followed their own path, steadfastly refusing to imitate any musical trends, always pushing the boundaries of their music, always striving to make music that was creative and idiosyncratic. ![]() They could not be described as "influential", simply because there is no other band that sounds like them. Whatever style they have utilised over the years - and they have utilised many - the result has always clearly been Jethro Tull music. In the beginning they stood along side the British Blues boomers such as Fleetwood Mac and Ten Years After. Later, they were often mentioned in the same breath as heavy metal specialists Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple. For some they will always be inextricably linked with the progressive scene along with Yes, ELP and Genesis. Others insist they move in the folk/rock field lead by Fairport Convention, with whom they have many links. Others highlight their jazz and classical leanings.
In short, Jethro Tull defy catagorisation, and perhaps that goes a long way to explaining the incredible durability and popularity that has kept them, to borrow one of Ian Anderson's favourite euphemisms, "if not in the Premier League, at the top of the first division" for thirty years. And that's 30 years without a break. Unlike so many of their contemporaries, Tull have never retired only to make a triumphant return years later. Since they formed in '68, Jethro Tull has always been there, and thankfully for the legions of loyal fans that keep the flame burning brightly, there are no signs of Tull bowing out for some years yet.
