There are five "coloured glove" or technical ability grades & three levels of Silver Glove.(equivalent to dan grades in some martial arts)

THERE ARE 2 TYPES OF COMPETITION:

”Assaut” or light contact for coloured glove students (Normally 3x1.30mins).
In an assaut competition there are three judges that award points for not only, hits to target areas but also variety, style and control of techniques, fighters must wear protection and the use of uncontrolled power will result in disqualification.

”Combat” or full contact for Silver Glove student, European and World Championships. (5x2mins). At this level most fights end with a clear winner but the points system is still used to decide in uncertain bouts. Fighters use full power blows and are not allowed any protection to the head or legs. Gum shields and groin protectors are obligatory.

GRADES
There is a full grading system (see gradings info page) from novice to expert: (Blue, Green, Red, White, Yellow and silver). It is possible for all recognized club instructors to grade there students from first grade, “Blue Glove” (after approximately four months training) to “Yellow Glove” (accomplished fighter). There are three levels of “Silver Glove” or expert grades, which are taken before a panel of three existing “Silver Glove” graders normally at a weekend seminar. Student holding a “Red Glove” grade are eligible to undertake an instructors grade, which will then allow them to teach. The highest grade is an honoury “Gold Glove” grade, which can only be given by the GBSF for outstanding achievement within the sport.

EQUIPMENT
To train in Savate a student should wear jogging trousers or shorts, soft soled shoes, a gum shield, boxing gloves and hand wraps, shin protectors and groin protection for males, bust protection for females. After an initial introduction period a student must purchase a GBSF license and Insurance. For competitions and gradings the students must purchase a purpose made “integral” or leotard and purpose made “Savate” boots.
